In the LightProbe project, we are exploring the next generation of medical ultrasound imaging systems:
The LightProbe is a programmable ultrasound transducer head, which incorporates the entire analog frontend and directly outputs the captured digital samples. This allows the LightProbe to be directly connected to any commodity hardware (phone, tablet, workstation) for post-processing over a standard digital link as simple as a standard peripheral, like a camera.

The LightProbe has two main challenges: The involved ten's of Gb/s data-rates produced by the frontend, which need to be processed and transported off-head, and the power/thermal constraints of such a high-performance handheld device.

[[File:LPf_v4.jpg|thumb|400px|Close-up of the digital ultrasound probe]]
This is an ongoing project at our lab and we are looking for motivated students to contribute on the following topics:
* Implementation of processing subunits: Hardware design FPGA/ASIC (VHDL/HLS)
* Programming of software functions: Microcontroller Programming / Processing system programming (C/C++/CUDA)
* System level design: Hardware software interactions, multi FPGA system, high bandwidth links (VIVADO/IP/HW-SW Codesign)
* Power/Thermal optimization: Modelling, Control, Task Scheduling (Matlab)
* Machine Learning (Python, FPGA)
* Ultrasond imaging algorithm development/improvements/tailoring for implementation (Matlab)
* PCB Design

If you are interested in any of the above topics, contact us.

== Short Description ==
The [[LightProbe]] system is designed to acquire ultrasound data for many different applications (e.g. tracking of microbubbles, imaging of muscular tissues). Since signals coming from different depths in the sample under test (e.g. the tissue) face different levels of attenuation. Consequently, the amplification stage on the ultrasound probe should be programmable and the amplification gain should be adapted depending on the depth (time) of origin of the signal to be amplified.

Currently, LightProbe implements a fixed gain value. Now we want to equip LightProbe with Time Gain Compensation (TGC) features, i.e., adding the capability of applying different gain values to signals coming from different depths (therefore, at different times) of the proband.

In this project, you will explore the existing hardware/software architecture of LightProbe, you will identify the approach to use to include TCG in the system, and, once implemented, you will perform ultrasound test measurements on phantoms.

=== Goal & Tasks ===
The goal of the project is to implement Time Gain Compensation (TGC) on LightProbe, in order to improve the quality of ultrasound reconstructed images.
The main tasks of this project are:
* Literature study of time gain compensation
* Study of the existing hardware
* Hw/SW implementation and testing
* Verification on Ultrasound phantoms

=== Prerequisites ===
* Signal processing basics
* MATLAB
* Python
* VLSI I
== Short Description ==
Ultrasound imaging is a non-invasive imaging technique that provides visible information on the structure of musculoskeletal tissues and organs. The development of wearable ultrasound probes would enable real-time non-invasive continuous monitoring of physiological parameters during the day, which is of particular interest for medical therapies and sport science. However, efficient machine learning (ML) algorithms are required in order to automatically extract the physiological parameters of interest (i.e., the length of muscle fascicles). In the context of this thesis, you will work with the raw data acquired by a fully-digital ultrasound probe, to build ML algorithm for the extraction of such physiological features.

=== Goal & Tasks ===
The goal of this project is to investigate the possibility of extracting relevant physiological information (the length of muscle fascicles) directly from raw Ultrasound data.
The main tasks of this project are:
* Literature study of ultrasound imaging principles
* Neural network training and testing, based on available datasets of labeled images
* Possible optimization and deployment of the network on an embedded platform
