Internet of Things Sensing Nodes pose very interesting design challenges due to their reduced form factor as well as extended lifetime capabilities (weeks to decades). Purely battery-powered systems often fails to meet the specifications because of their large size, high replacing costs and environmental concerns. Hence, in this project, the availability of a reliable power supply source is assumed not to be true any more. An ensemble of alternative power sources, including energy harvesters, super-capacitors, small storage elements must be considered as alternative energy suppliers. However, given the volatile and intermitted nature of these power sources, an alternative computing paradigm based on energy-availability must be investigated.
To enable Transient Computing nodes the following directions have been investigated: 1) Always-on ultra-low-power circuits with approximate energy-efficient computation. 2) Smart Power Management Systems.
