Short Description

As the internet-of-things (IoT) continues to grow, many applications require intelligence on the devices, low power and subsystems to gete energy and radio communication. We are proposing several industrial master thesis between IIS and Hilti that includes the desing of new hardware-software devices. In particular, machine learing, energy harvesting, bluetooth communication and energy efficiency will be the main topic. Currently the following projects are available for master and/or semester projects

1: Smart shock sensor. Piezo setting counter: Placing a small piezo capacitor on a bridge cutout of PCB then identifying shock patterns through an amplifier circuit. Eventually, implementing light weight AI. Eventually, extending to multiple axis/degrees of freedom.

2: Real Time data logger: Small standalone unit that can hook into existing tools and store the real time data while the tool is running. In the range of 100Hz and 1 to 8 IO ports with differing signal types. Possible communication protocols required. Can be scaled or customized for different tools.

3: NFC based contact less sensor bridge for insert tool recognition for TE capacitive sensing: pass information across an air gap. Design analogous system to perform a measurement task. For reference: https://www.st.com/en/solutions-reference-designs/nfc-sensortag-nfc-dynamic-tag-sensor-node.html

4: MDX sensor AI in Embedded. 50K samples in 4ms feed to AI for classification under 0.5sec. Currently a prototype has been implemented on an STI development board with M4. An all in one PCB would need to be designed and built to take over functionality.

5: Consumable ID: Design a new data frame of credit card reader/writer style system. Current format is 12mm in length, 8mm length required.

6: ON!Track 3.0: Asset management tag with 3 axis accelerometer, NFC activated BLE tag. Design low power AI to identify different usage cases.

Depending on the applicant's profile and project type, his tasks may involve some of the following:

Prerequisites

(not all need to be met by the single candidate)

  • Experience using the laboratory instrumentation - signal generators, oscilloscopes, DAQ cards, Matlab etc..
  • knowledge of microcontroller programming and PC programming (C/C++, preferably embedded C)
  • basic knowledge or interests on power converters, wireless communication, and circuit design at a components level (IC design is NOT involved)
  • Motivation to build and test a real system
  • PCB Desing or willing to learn it
  • Machine learning on microcontroller (or the motivation/interess to learn it)

Detailed Task Description A detailed task description will be worked out right before the project, taking the student's interests and capabilities into account.
