Short Description

To understand, predict and tailor the electrochemical behavior of lithium ion batteries, knowledge of the electrode microstructure is of great importance. During the last campaign (Mai 2012) at the TOMCAT facility of the Swiss Light Source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (http://www.psi.ch/sls/tomcat/tomcat), we collected some 800GB of 3D micro-tomography data form a number of representative battery electrodes. The aim of this project is to extract information useful for the battery community out of these huge datasets. The first task is to implement fast and robust algorithms for 3D binarization, filtering and segmentation that can run on the computers and computer clusters operated by the Integrated Systems Laboratory. In the second part of this thesis, the project will focus on advanced processing tasks such as extraction of particle size distributions (PSD) to verify the performed processing by comparing it to PSDs obtained from alternative techniques. Depending on the progress of the project, the student can participate in the design and execution of follow-up studies at the TOMCAT facility or sophisticated, electrochemical 3D simulations on the already obtained data. The student should have experience in computer programming (preferentially image processing or distributed computing), should be able to work independently and think critically. Enthusiasm for energy storage and industrial processing is appreciated.
