Introduction

LTE Cat-M1 (eMTC) is a 5G standard optimized for low energy consumption and excellent coverage. We are currently developing a modem for the Cat-M1 standard. One of the key components of a Cat-M1 IoT modem is its channel estimation and equalization block. Depending on the channel conditions and the targeted SNR regime the choice of the channel estimation algorithm can have a big impact on the performance of the system. The current implementation of the channel estimation and equalization block was optimized to provide a good complexity-performance trade-off at very low SNRs and with slow fading channel conditions, but it is not well suited for fast fading channels with Doppler shifts that can be as high as 300 Hz. An alternative implementation of the channel estimation and equalization block for fast fading channels is thus needed to improve the performance of the current system in such scenarios.

Project Description

As a first step in your project, you will evaluate the different channel estimation algorithms for fast fading channels available in literature. After selecting the candidates that may provide the most promising complexity-performance trade-off you will implement and compare them in our Matlab framework. You will then select one algorithm, and optimize and quantise it for a hardware implementation. After coming up with an efficient architecture for this algorithm you can either design it as a standalone ASIC, or integrate it into our RF SoC and test it on an FPGA.
