Short Description
Batteries for electric vehicles are costly and have poor energy-to-weight ratios. With the goal of developing a rechargeable battery with dramatically increased energy density and decreased cost, we will conduct synchrotron x-ray experiments on new battery materials. This Master thesis topic is to prepare the setup for these experiments that will be carried out in Spring 2011 at the Swiss Light Source of the Paul Scherrer Institute. Electric characteristics of the materials will be measured during radiation and application of stress to the battery materials. This project is a collaboration with MIT and a battery start-up company located in Cambridge, MA. You will carry out your work at the Integrated Systems Laboratory, but have the opportunity to interact with all members of the international team on a regular basis through video conferencing and site visits.
